The Origin of Nirmal Handicrafts
There are several stories pertaining to the origin of Nirmal Handicrafts. The most popular one is that in the 17th century, Naqqash families have migrated from Rajasthan and started performing their art in Nirmal. These artisans are thus still famously known as Naqqash artisans. These artisans live in a town about 220 kms away from Hyderabad. Initially they are said to have trained by senior artists until they are skilled. They were asked to examine and draw the pictures of animals, birds, etc. so they could get the clear idea of proportions. Only after they become perfect in drawing, they were allowed to craft the toys.
The initial crafts had a very narrow spectrum and majorly consisted of figures and forms based on Indian mythology and motifs inspired from Mughal rule. Later, the art form took quite a transition and they started including local elements, utility items, furniture and home decors. Nirmal handicrafts typically include toys, plaques, furniture, jewellery, paintings, etc.
Nirmal toys and handicrafts are made from a special wood known as ‘poniki’ or white sander. Poniki is a type of softwood that is very light and flexible that it can be cut into desired shapes. All the toys are carved skillfully and different parts are glued together perfectly. These are then coated using a substance known as ‘chintalappam’ which is a mixture of saw dust and boiled tamarind seeds. The crafts are further coated with white clay before they are painted using desired paints. Initially, natural color dyes and herbal paints were only used for painting Nirmal handicrafts. However, duco paints are used now for painting these handicrafts. These paints are responsible for the typical shine that resides on these toys. Oil paints and enamel colors are used as well.
Nirmal toys are amazing add-ons to art galleries, living spaces and even office spaces. Any visitor who comes to Telangana never misses the opportunity to see this land of toys. These toys are ideal for gifts and souvenirs as well and hence the best bet to lay your hands on.
