Ayurveda is a way of life that was discovered in India about more than 5000 years ago. It is known as the science of life and the mother of all healing. In Ayurveda it is believed that every individual has a bodily constitution that is unique and based on several factors. They include physical, mental and physiological factors and are called doshas in Ayurveda. There are 3 doshas in every human being – vata, pitta, kapha. The ratio of the three doshas however is unique in every individual. Ayurveda says, every illness or sickness in the body can be attributed to the imbalance of these doshas. And that by balancing them out by making some changes in your food and lifestyle habits, you can get back into perfect health. Let us know about these 3 doshas in detail.

3 Doshas in Ayurveda

The 3 doshas are comprised of the five elements air, earth, water, fire and space. Here is what each of the doshas in ayurveda signify:

Vata – Vata dosha mainly consists of two elements namely earth and air and is linked with creativity and energy. It is described as cold and dry. People with vata dominance in their doshas are usually slim, active, kind and have a penchant for arts and creativity. When this goes out of balance they experience anxiety, insomnia, unstable mood and appetite. To put this into balance they have to consume more warm foods and drinks like cooked vegetables, eggs, dairy, oats, brown rice and follow daily meditation to calm the anxiety. Bitter and dried foods are to be avoided. Autumn is the representation of this dosha.

Pitta – Pitta dosha is based on fire and water. It is usually hot, liquid, oily and sharp. Summer is known as pitta season. People with pitta dominance have muscular build and are usually highly motivated and determined in nature. Their firm nature can sometimes lead to conflict. They should focus on work-life balance in order to keep their stress on check. These people should include light and cold foods like fruits, non-starchy vegetables, eggs, etc. in their diet and avoid heavy spicy foods.

Kapha – Kapha pronounced as ‘kuffa’ is the dosha based on earth and water. It can be described as cold, steady, soft and slow. The characteristic traits of kaphs dominant person are empathy, care, patience and healthy immune system. Kapha people are usually easily prone to weight gain and depression. They should establish a strong exercise schedule and ma your intain warm body temperatures. They should consider eating spicy and filling foods and avoid heavy fats and processed foods.

Usually everyone has any one of these three doshas dominantly. You can know your dosha through any ayurveda practitioner or find it online by answering some questions based on your lifestyle. Once you know your dosha, you can eat right foods suitable for your type, do exercise to establish balance and keep your health in check.
